How best to find an ESL job

Q: Are there any particular websites or publications that are recommended?

Q: Are there any cultural factors I should take into consideration?
  • Dress should be casual but smart
  • Many schools don’t use email and may not have a website
Qualifications needed
 
Q: What qualifications are needed to find an ESL job in Greece?
  • A Bachelors degree is mandatory. Many schools are willing to take on newly qualified teachers with little or no experience.
Documents required for visa/work permit
 
Q: What documents are required for obtaining a visa and/or work permit?
  • Original degree certificate
  • Being an EU country, it is easier for EU nationals to obtain a work visa
Hotspot areas
 
Q: Are there are cities or regions where it is easier to find a job?
  • Athens, but there are jobs available throughout the country, even in small towns and villages
Types of jobs available

Q: What kinds of teaching jobs am I likely to find?
  • Private language schools
Good times of year

Q: Are there any particular times of year it is better, or easier, to look for a teaching job?
  • Most jobs start in September and there are also a fair number of openings in January
Contract lengths

Q: What is the average contract length for a teaching job?
  • Irrespective of the start date, contract generally run until the end of the school year (May/June).

Q: What is the average salary?
  • 8.81 EUR per hour gross, minus 15.89% NI contribution
Average teaching hours per week

Q: On average how many teaching hours would I work per week?
  • 25 hours
Housing

Q: Would I be expected to find my own housing, or would it be provided by the school?
  • Housing is usually provided.
CV writing
  • Keep it short and simple
  • Emphasize any teaching experience you have
  • Avoid too much details about unrelated jobs
  • Include a photocs
Job Interviews
  • Read up on exams – particularly the Cambridge exams, which are an important focus for students of English in Greece
